Christian Horner: “Max Verstappen won’t stay in F1 until he’s 40. If he doesn’t enjoy it, he’ll change sport”. Christian Horner discussed the long-term future of Max Verstappen.

Max Verstappen is one of the most sought-after drivers on the entire Formula 1 grid. He has a contract with Red Bull until 2028, but for some time now, Mercedes has been doing everything to lure him away. The now four-time world champion has been very clear about his future and his views on the direction F1 is heading, with its oversized calendars and Sprint races.

For this reason, he has repeatedly stated that he doesn’t intend to race in the category until he’s 40, like Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. This means that, at the latest, the Dutchman will remain on the starting grid until 2036.

As reported by *RacingNews365*, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner discussed the long-term future of the Dutch champion in a recent interview. These were his words: “Max is his own man, and from the conversations I’ve had, it’s clear he doesn’t see himself as Fernando or Lewis and won’t stay in this sport for the next 15 years or so.” – the Red Bull team boss pointed out.

“He has interests outside of Formula 1. He enjoys driving GT cars, racing simulators, and LMP cars. Plus, some of the paddock dynamics don’t sit well with him. I’m certain, though, that as long as he enjoys what he does, he’ll keep doing it. But as soon as the enjoyment fades, he has the character and personality to say, ‘You know what? Next year I’ll drive GT cars.’”

Christian Horner concluded by saying, “We’re very grateful he’s our driver, and we hope it stays that way for many years to come, at least until 2028, but no one has a crystal ball.”
