Sergio Perez’s forced departure from Red Bull at the end of last season came as a surprise to the Mexican driver, who had believed he would continue his work in Milton Keynes. Now, on the eve of the 2025 season, Perez is rewriting his agenda without ruling out a future return to Formula 1.
The first half of the 2024 season had been promising. Consistently strong podium finishes gave Red Bull hope that the worst was behind them. But it was only an illusion. From Imola onward, Sergio Perez’s season gradually drifted into mediocrity. Poor race performances were soon compounded by early eliminations in qualifying. The atmosphere around Perez was not particularly supportive, and as the weekends passed, the team’s and Helmut Marko‘s intentions became increasingly clear.
Perez prioritizes family
Caught in a vicious cycle, the Austrian team—despite renewing his contract in the first half of the season—decided to terminate its relationship with Sergio Perez prematurely. Now, on the eve of the new championship, Sergio Perez is a driver without a seat, but he remains unfazed: “My priority now is to enjoy life, doing things I’ve never done before, traveling, and spending time with my family.”
Sergio Perez now wants to dedicate his time to his family: “My greatest motivation right now is to be with my children and be more present in their lives,” he explained.
Sergio Perez: “Returning to F1? We’ll see. I didn’t expect to leave Red Bull”
As for a potential return to F1, there’s time. Checo Perez is putting driving on the back burner. “In the next six months, I’ll decide my future and the next steps in my career. Will I return to F1? It’s too early to say. Everything happened so quickly at the end of last season. I didn’t expect to leave the team,” concluded the Mexican driver during an event in Mexico.
