After Christian Horner’s exit, could Red Bull be facing failure? Insights point to long-standing problems. Christian Horner’s sudden exit from Red Bull raises concerns.

The sudden announcement of Christian Horner’s departure from Red Bull Racing has sent shockwaves throughout the Formula 1 community. Many insiders and fans alike are now questioning whether this unexpected shake-up might lead to significant challenges for the Milton Keynes-based team, potentially even threatening its future stability and success.

The abrupt nature of Horner’s exit—after more than two decades leading Red Bull through unprecedented success—raises concerns about how the team will cope with such a fundamental change. A revolution so unforeseen and immediate is bound to disrupt established working methods and shake the foundations of what has been a remarkably stable leadership structure for years.

For Some, the Problems Began Long Before Horner’s Departure

However, according to Martin Brundle, former Formula 1 driver and a well-known commentator on Sky Sports, the current crisis at Red Bull Racing is not entirely new. Brundle believes the team’s decline began several years ago and was tied to deeper issues than just Horner’s recent exit.

“I don’t think Red Bull will collapse immediately,” Martin Brundle explained. “They still benefit from inertia within the team, with well-established structures and workflows. The real problems, in my opinion, started with the passing of Dietrich Mateschitz, who owned 49% of the team. While he was still in charge, nothing happened without his approval. He was the undisputed leader of the group, and since his death, new people and new structures have come in, which have ultimately led to the difficult situation we see now.”

Dietrich Mateschitz, the visionary co-founder of Red Bull, played a central role in steering the team’s direction for years. His absence has left a leadership vacuum that, according to some, has weakened the team’s cohesion and strategic clarity.

The Road Ahead: How Will Red Bull Respond?

With such significant internal upheaval, it remains to be seen how Red Bull Racing will adapt and respond to these challenges. The team’s future decisions—both in terms of leadership and driver lineup—will be closely scrutinized by fans and competitors alike.

One of the most closely watched questions is the status of Max Verstappen. The Dutch driver, four-time world champion and the face of Red Bull’s recent dominance, continues to be linked with Mercedes and its team principal Toto Wolff. Whether Verstappen stays loyal to Red Bull or moves on could prove decisive in shaping the team’s fortunes in the years to come.

As the 2025 Formula 1 season progresses, all eyes remain fixed on how the storied Red Bull Racing team will navigate this uncertain new chapter.
