As 2025 begins, Adrian Newey is now officially able to start his role at Aston Martin. The aerodynamics guru announced his departure from Red Bull in May of last year.
There was much speculation about his next move, with Ferrari appearing to be in contention for another major signing after securing Lewis Hamilton. However, in September, Lawrence Stroll’s team pulled off a significant corporate coup: Newey not only became central to the technical project but also gained shareholder status.
Before getting hands-on with Aston Martin’s future car, the British engineer had to observe a period of gardening leave, after which he can begin contributing to the team. *PlanetF1* revealed that the wait is almost over. Starting Monday, March 3—just two weeks before the 2025 Formula 1 season kicks off—Adrian Newey will officially take on the roles of engineer and sporting director at Aston Martin. The aerodynamics wizard will immediately begin focusing on the 2026 program, a pivotal year with regulation changes, with the single goal of bringing Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll’s team to the top.
Adrian Newey has consistently made a difference in Formula 1, demonstrating his ability to adapt to the sport’s evolving technical regulations. In 2022, with the reintroduction of ground effect, he designed a winning car for Red Bull, which became the most dominant team the following year, securing 22 wins out of 23 races.
The news of Adrian Newey’s arrival follows another major shake-up at Aston Martin. Andy Cowell has been appointed as the new team principal, replacing Mike Krack, who will transition to the role of Chief Trackside Officer, responsible for overseeing all on-track activities.
