The Sergio Perez family is hopeful for a return to F1, with Checo’s father confident: “His best version is yet to come.” The Mexican driver, who had only renewed his contract with Red Bull at the start of 2024, now finds himself without a seat. The goal is to return to the paddock as quickly as possible, but unless some currently unlikely opportunities arise, it will be a challenging task.
Sergio Perez’s story over the last two seasons in Formula 1 raises questions. The Guadalajara native may not rank as a champion on par with his teammate, but it would be a mistake to classify him among the so-called “pay drivers” so often criticized by fans. Checo has been a good driver, at times excellent, and perhaps still is.
Perhaps it was the chemistry with Red Bull’s machinery that was lacking—a car designed with Max Verstappen’s input and one that, in its latest iteration, even fell short of the Dutchman’s expectations. Or perhaps, at 34, the Mexican has begun to experience the gradual decline in ability that eventually affects everyone. One thing is certain: the goal is to return to the grid.
Antonio Perez: “We Thank Red Bull, We Won’t Be Rivals”
Speaking during the Mexico E-Prix of Formula E, Antonio Perez discussed his son Sergio: “It will be wonderful,” he began in an interview with *SoyMotor.com*. “He is the most recognized Mexican, the most recognized Latin American in the world today, surpassing footballers and other personalities. Back in the day, the media didn’t cover Ayrton Senna or Fangio, who would have been even more famous with all their championships.”
“The best version of Checo Pérez is yet to come. Everyone will be very happy and proud. What is about to happen will be historic, I assure you. The only thing I can tell you is that the Perez family has not abandoned Formula 1.”
“We owe a great deal of thanks to Red Bull. The best years of Checo Pérez’s career were there. This should not be seen as a rivalry; this is the world of motorsport. We need to understand one thing to make it clear: Formula 1 only has 20 seats, and we are over 7 billion people. Everyone is trying to secure a spot there.”
