The 2026 Formula 1 season will mark another major milestone in the sport’s continuous evolution, with significant changes coming to power unit regulations. It is a transitional moment that every team on the grid, including Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team, aims to capitalize on. Under the leadership of Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll, Aston Martin has been undergoing a significant technical and structural transformation, with the clear goal of becoming a title contender in the near future.
The latest and perhaps most impactful move in this ambitious restructuring process is the recruitment of Adrian Newey—the most successful and celebrated car designer in Formula 1 history. Newey’s decision to leave Red Bull Racing after nearly two decades and join the Silverstone-based team has sent shockwaves through the paddock and reignited hopes at Aston Martin.
Two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso has shared his thoughts on the arrival of Newey, emphasizing the enormous benefits his presence will bring to the team—not only in terms of aerodynamics, which is traditionally his core area of expertise, but also across all aspects of race team operations and long-term development.
Alonso highlights Newey’s complete understanding of what makes a top team
Speaking to F1.com, Fernando Alonso revealed that he has already had multiple opportunities to engage in in-depth discussions with Newey, giving him early insight into how the legendary engineer operates and thinks.
“We’ve had lunch together a few times,” Alonso explained. “We mostly talked about the team, the simulator, how to make things feel a little more realistic, and how to improve overall. Adrian has a lot of experience with how a top team should fight for championships and how to perform at the highest level in every area.”
Alonso was quick to underline that Adrian Newey’s impact is not limited to the design of the car’s aerodynamics, despite that being the field where he earned his iconic status with title-winning cars at Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull.
“When people think of Adrian, they often think only of aerodynamics,” Alonso continued. “But I believe Adrian has a much broader vision of how a racing team should operate. It’s not just about generating downforce or optimizing airflow. Every time we speak, all of us at the team learn something valuable from him. He brings knowledge that touches every department—from strategy and simulation to operations and team structure.”
Aston Martin prepares for a new era with Newey’s leadership
Adrian Newey’s arrival is a strategic coup for Aston Martin ahead of the 2026 regulation overhaul, where the new power unit rules and revised chassis guidelines will give teams a rare opportunity to reset the competitive order. With Newey onboard, Aston Martin hopes to avoid the pitfalls that plagued other teams during previous regulation changes, and instead leap forward with a fully integrated design philosophy and technical package.
Alonso, who has competed with and against teams designed by Newey for over two decades, recognizes that his presence alone could elevate Aston Martin’s competitiveness. The Spaniard views Newey not just as a designer, but as a visionary figure capable of shaping how an entire Formula 1 team functions on a strategic and structural level.
