Carlos Sainz has reason to be optimistic. According to Juan Pablo Montoya, Williams has the potential to emulate McLaren’s trajectory in F1. The British team hasn’t won since 2012, the year of Pastor Maldonado’s surprising victory at the Spanish Grand Prix. That win had ended another long drought, which began in 2004 when Juan Pablo Montoya claimed victory at the Brazilian Grand Prix.
The coming years will likely be challenging for Carlos Sainz at Williams. The Spaniard, who enjoyed four strong seasons with Ferrari, will likely have to settle for fighting for points. While the team, under James Vowles’ leadership, is gradually improving, podiums and victories remain out of reach for now. However, Formula 1 has proven time and again that surprises are possible for both fans and insiders.
McLaren’s remarkable turnaround, going from backmarker to championship winner in just a few seasons, should serve as inspiration. Juan Pablo Montoya, one of the last drivers to win with Williams, believes in the team’s resurgence. The Colombian feels that while Carlos Sainz deserved a better seat, he could still make his mark with Williams.
Carlos Sainz Can Win in F1 with Williams
In an interview with CasasDeApuestas.bet, Juan Pablo Montoya shared his perspective about the former Ferrari driver: “It’s disappointing that Carlos Sainz didn’t end up in a better place, but I believe Williams will be another McLaren in the coming years. I think they can achieve incredible things in the future. In two or three years, Williams could be on McLaren’s level after changing everything.”
“They have the financial support they need and all the resources to get the job done.”
A significant opportunity will arise in 2026, the year of major technical regulation changes. Positioning themselves as frontrunners during this shift, climbing the grid close to the top teams, will be crucial for achieving their future goals.
