Williams has unveiled the celebratory livery of the FW46, created in collaboration with Mercado Libre, with which Franco Colapinto and Alexander Albon will race in the Mexican GP.
Although the team has been languishing in the back of the grid for decades, aside from sporadic exploits in certain seasons, Williams was undeniably one of the most prestigious teams in Formula 1 during the 1980s and 1990s, winning nine Constructors’ Championships between 1980 and 1997, many of which were signed by Adrian Newey.
While blue has always been the predominant color associated with the Grove team, yellow, which first appeared on the FW08C in 1983, also contributed to making the English team a true icon for Formula 1 fans.
Yellow remained a prominent feature on all Williams liveries until 1993, a year before Ayrton Senna’s historic (and unfortunate) debut, replacing Alain Prost.
Williams, the return of the yellow-blue livery
To pay tribute to the glories of the past, the team led by James Vowles, thanks to the collaboration with Mercado Libre, will bring back the yellow-blue livery during the upcoming weekend in Mexico, with yellow present on the engine cover of the FW46 of Franco Colapinto and Alexander Albon.
“The attractive special takeover will celebrate the shared passion of Williams and Mercado Libre for speed and innovation during the Latin American leg of the Formula 1 calendar,” reads the statement released a few minutes ago.
“Williams Racing and Mercado Libre are two brands synonymous with speed, trust, and innovation,” shared James Bower, commercial director of Williams Racing.
“This striking engine cover is the perfect way to celebrate our partnership. The designs of the yellow liveries hold a special place in Williams’ history. It’s fantastic to see this color return to our cars with one of the leading technology companies in Latin America.”
Juan Lavista, vice president of marketing at Mercado Libre, added: “We are honored to bring yellow back to Williams, featuring the iconic Mercado Libre handshake logo on the race car and on the drivers’ suits for the Latin American GPs.”
“The partnership with Williams aligns with our shared passion for speed and innovation. By connecting the thrill of racing with our commitment to fast and reliable shipping, we aim to create meaningful connections with millions of fans and users around the world.”
