Kimi Antonelli will head into Formula 1’s 2026 summer break as the championship leader, holding a 50-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton after finishing third at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Despite his commanding position, the Mercedes driver has played down comparisons with Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, insisting he still has considerable progress to make before reaching their level.
The Bologna-born driver is living a dream and has no desire to wake up from it. In only his second Formula 1 season, Kimi Antonelli has reached the summer shutdown at the top of the standings after another important result at the Hungaroring, where his podium from seventh on the grid extended his championship lead.

Kimi Antonelli is aware that he has made a significant step forward, not only with his performances on track but also mentally. At the same time, the Mercedes talent is determined to remain grounded. He knows the championship is long and that the competition remains formidable.
The Hungarian Grand Prix, where he delivered a remarkably solid performance, could nevertheless represent a warning sign. Lando Norris returned to winning form at the Hungaroring, and McLaren could potentially repeat the powerful development surge it produced between the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
Despite a campaign filled with convincing performances, Kimi Antonelli does not yet believe he should be placed alongside drivers of the calibre of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. Both rivals joined the Italian in the post-race press conference following the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix.
Kimi Antonelli plays down Verstappen and Norris comparisons
“I really didn’t expect to be here at this point in the season. Of course, I’m very happy, and it’s the best possible way to head into the summer break. We have to keep pushing because the second half of the season will be tough, but we’ll do our best,” Kimi Antonelli said.
“I don’t really like judging myself, but I feel I’ve had a good first half of the championship. I’m doing a great job, but I think there is still a long way to go and a lot of work to do before reaching the level of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.”
A championship lead without losing sight of the bigger picture
After limiting the damage at the Hungaroring, the Mercedes prodigy wants to continue his development without becoming distracted by comparisons or the championship table. His focus remains on maturing as a driver and maintaining the progress that has carried him to the top of Formula 1.
The summer break has therefore arrived at the ideal moment, giving the Italian an opportunity to reset before the pressure of the title fight intensifies. Kimi Antonelli can step away holding a 50-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton in the 2026 Formula 1 driver standings, but he remains determined not to become overwhelmed by his position at the top.
