Lando Norris converted pole position into victory at the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix, claiming his first win of the season and describing his performance at the Hungaroring as one of the best of his Formula 1 career. The reigning world champion controlled the race with enough confidence to believe he could prevail regardless of how the strategy unfolded.
The triumph completed an impeccable weekend for Lando Norris, who had secured his first pole position of the campaign just one day earlier. His success in Budapest was the 12th victory of his Formula 1 career and allowed him to enter the summer break with the winner’s trophy, while McLaren also celebrated a result that confirmed its renewed competitiveness.
Lando Norris converts Hungarian GP pole into victory
McLaren had already emerged as the team to beat after Lando Norris ended Mercedes’ pole-position streak in Hungary. Qualifying highlighted the efficiency of the team’s latest upgrade package, giving the British driver an ideal opportunity to complete the weekend with victory.
The performance gains delivered by those developments had been evident throughout the decisive stages of the weekend. Lando Norris had also credited McLaren’s upgrades for his Hungarian GP pole, before converting that improved pace into the team’s most important result of the event.
However, McLaren’s victory was accompanied by the disappointment of a potential one-two finish slipping away. Oscar Piastri had been in contention for second place, but the Australian was forced to retire following a gearbox failure.
Lando Norris explains unwavering confidence in Hungarian GP win
Despite describing the McLaren as lively and still challenging to handle, Lando Norris felt increasingly confident in his ability to extract its performance and understood how to produce the lap time he needed.
“The car is lively and it is still difficult to drive, but I feel very capable of driving it,” Lando Norris told Sky Sports F1 after the race. “I think I have some very good ideas about how to extract the speed from this car, how to produce the lap time and how to make the car work.”
Although his opening lap was not perfect, that early setback did little to weaken his belief that victory was within reach. The McLaren driver felt his race pace was strong enough to cover different strategic possibilities, including extending his stint under the Virtual Safety Car or stopping before recovering on fresher tyres.
“Obviously, my first lap wasn’t the best, but apart from that, I had so much confidence that I would win the race because my pace was extremely strong today, whatever happened,” Lando Norris explained. “I could have stayed out longer under the VSC, or I could simply have pitted and then fought my way back through on fresh tyres.”
Lando Norris ranks victory among his best F1 performances
The victory left McLaren’s number one delighted and proud of the way he had managed the race. After securing his 12th career win and opening his account for the 2026 season, Lando Norris considered the drive one of his finest individual performances in Formula 1.
“The pace was fantastic. It was probably one of my best performances as a driver, so I am very pleased with it,” Lando Norris added.
The result capped a breakthrough Hungarian Grand Prix weekend for McLaren, even if Oscar Piastri’s retirement prevented the team from completing a one-two finish. It also gave the reigning world champion valuable momentum heading into the summer break, with the latest championship picture available in the Formula 1 driver standings.
For Ferrari, McLaren’s progress had already become clear when Lando Norris overturned the qualifying battle at the Hungaroring. His commanding race performance then reinforced the impression that McLaren’s latest package had transformed the competitive order in Budapest.
