Juan Pablo Montoya dismisses Fernando Alonso and backs Max Verstappen for Aston Martin’s new direction, which will officially begin in 2026 with the introduction of new technical regulations and the first car designed by Adrian Newey, who will take over the technical department of the Silverstone team in less than a year.
Although the Asturian driver is still undoubtedly one of the best on the grid, for the former Williams driver, age is too decisive a factor for the future: “Fernando is incredible, but how long can he keep going?” he commented in an interview with Gambling Zone.
“I don’t think Lance is going anywhere, and Fernando is not a long-term option. When they make that decision and say: ‘Hey, we have Honda, we have Newey. Why not focus on Max?’ – he pointed out – “This would mean offering Max the same kind of deal that Adrian Newey got, but with an even better contract. Then it could be called a long-term project,” he added. “You would have the best drivers in the world, if not the best, the current top driver in the championship. The better he performs, the more money he will make in the long term, because the company will be worth even more.” – Juan Pablo Montoya continued.
Meanwhile, despite many rumors of his possible departure, the Dutch champion has not yet shown any particular signs of dissatisfaction, despite the recent departures and lackluster results: “Things are working quite well, it’s just that the results are not what we want. It’s up to us to change things as a team. I trust that people know what they’re doing. They’ve already proven that. Other teams also have very good people, but I don’t think that’s the issue right now. We just took a wrong path, so it was time to hit the reset button and go in a different direction. In the end, it’s not just two or three people who make the difference. It’s the collective that makes the difference. Everyone has to contribute and work well in their role.”
