A war has been announced between Jos Verstappen and Johnny Herbert. After the staunch defense of the three-time Formula 1 world champion in favor of Lando Norris in Mexico City, which was universally deemed incorrect and well beyond the lines, the former British driver, now an FIA sports commissioner, had criticisms about the Dutchman’s behavior, using very harsh words against him.
“It annoys me a lot when he drives like this because he is incredibly talented and, at this stage of the championship, he should just avoid risky situations and focus on driving as best as he can,” the Englishman commented.
“The penalties in Mexico will not prevent Verstappen from pushing Norris off the track in the future. When Max adopts this aggressive mentality to gain an advantage by putting another driver off track, he must realize that it is not necessary. He should aim for victory in the cleanest way possible.” – he pointed out.
Jos, the father, then quickly responded, stating that the stewards should not make statements to the press: “One time they give 5 seconds, another time 10 seconds. There must be a clear line of demarcation in this case, so it is known what penalty is being received.”
Johnny Herbert does not back down
Returning to the matter in a recent interview with SafestBettingSites.co.uk, Johnny Herbert countered Jos Verstappen ’s comments: “I am Johnny Herbert the steward and the professional during a race weekend, and Johnny Herbert the commentator at other times, expressing what I think.”
“When I am a steward, I do not express any opinion. Everyone has one; Martin Brundle has an opinion. Why can’t I do it when I’m not on the track? The track has been my world for 50 years. If I disagree with what I see on the track, I say it. It’s not just about Max. I will criticize anyone if I deem it justified.” – the British former racing driver and broadcaster who competed in Formula One from 1989 to 2000 pointed out.
“I understand Jos’s point of view because it concerns his son. Is there some bias? No, of course not. I wasn’t the only one to think that Max went overboard in Mexico. Lando Norris and Zak Brown thought so too. When I talk to people on Monday or Tuesday, it doesn’t fall under my responsibilities as a steward. Jos has always been very explicit about what is happening at Red Bull. Is that his position? It’s all very similar. If you have an opinion and want to express it, then you can do so.” – Johnny Herbert concluded.
