Starting next year, Formula 1 will have a bit more of an Italian flair with the arrival of Kimi Antonelli behind the wheel of a Mercedes. The young Italian talent will replace the departing Lewis Hamilton, which will undoubtedly be a significant challenge for him and the team.
Kimi Antonelli will be making a big leap to Formula 1 after just one season in Formula 2, a year that was marked by highs and lows. While his talent is unquestionable, some industry insiders believe that a year of development with Williams might have been the best choice for the young Kimi’s career.
“Great to have an Italian driver”
One of the last Italian drivers to be part of the F1 grid, Vitantonio Liuzzi, who now serves as a race steward, commented on Kimi Antonelli’s arrival in Formula 1. “Even back in his karting days, he showed great speed. I think he has enormous talent,” said the former Force India driver.
“The crash at Monza is something completely normal—it happens to everyone. There’s a lot of pressure, but he deserves a seat in F1. I’m sure he’ll have a brilliant career,” Liuzzi added. “I’m happy that Toto gave him this opportunity, and I can’t wait to see him on track in 2025.” – he pointed out.
“George Russell is a tough teammate to go up against. At the same time, I’m sure he’ll help Kimi develop. Of course, it won’t be easy at first, but Kimi is smart enough to know how to play his cards right. He has the speed, and that’s what counts.”
With Kimi Antonelli’s arrival, Italy will once again have a driver on the F1 grid, after Antonio Giovinazzi said goodbye to the sport in 2021. “We’ve been missing an Italian driver. Italy is a historic nation for motorsport. Aside from racing, we’ve always had important brands and companies within Formula 1. I believe Kimi will have a lot of support from Italian fans; there’s so much passion among us.” – he concluded.
