McLaren driver Oscar Piastri, in an interview during the break leading up to the Austin GP, was highly critical of himself and wants to improve significantly ahead of the final part of the championship and the start of the 2025 F1 season.
Oscar Piastri, in his second season in Formula 1, has been delivering incredible performances. The Australian has won two GPs, in Hungary and Baku, with an amazing defense against Charles Leclerc. Thanks to these results, along with several podiums, Oscar Piastri holds fourth place in the drivers’ championship.
The gap from his teammate Lando Norris, who is directly chasing Max Verstappen for the lead, is 42 points. Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, who is just 8 points ahead of the McLaren driver, is much more within reach.
Many of the points were lost at the start of the season. In the first eight races, Oscar Piastri never made it to the podium and had his darkest weekend in Miami, where he finished the race in 13th place. Since the Spanish GP, the season has taken a different turn, and the 23-year-old has been able to show all his talent.
Despite a great second half of the season, Oscar Piastri remains very critical of himself and believes that his inexperience on some circuits, where F1 will race soon, could expose his weaknesses.
“I think I can, and I need to improve a bit everywhere. This season, I’ve made life harder for myself with qualifying, where I’ve never felt comfortable. More consistency would be helpful. I’m still pleased with what I did in Baku in terms of overtaking, handling pressure, and things like that.”
“There will still be some tough races in the final part of the season,” the Australian continues. “Circuits where I’ve only raced once. Trying to work on improving the weaknesses I had on these tracks last year will be key to finishing the season in the best way. I need to improve a bit everywhere. I feel like I’m making great strides, but I’m not yet a complete driver.” – Oscar Piastri concluded.
