Mercedes’ flop in Singapore
More than a week after the Singapore Grand Prix, which was held at the 4.94-kilometre Marina Bay Street Circuit, the controversy over Mercedes’ race strategy has finally been laid to rest. Lewis Hamilton has officially closed the dispute with Mercedes over the team’s flawed strategy during the last race. As the only top driver to start on Soft tires, the British champion was forced to pit early, losing both time and positions. The result was very disappointing: starting from third, Hamilton finished the race in sixth place, with a heavily worn set of Pirelli Hard tires.
It was a decision that did not sit well with Sir Lewis, who, during an event celebrating the 50th anniversary of sponsor Petronas, revealed that he had opposed the strategy but was not listened to. The matter was only resolved the following weekend, when the seven-time world champion posted two Instagram stories to close the issue.
Lewis Hamilton’s post
“I’m focusing,” wrote Lewis Hamilton, “on training for the next race. I know there’s been some talk about the strategy in the last Singapore GP, which didn’t work out. When things like this happen, it’s normal to feel frustrated, and it’s easy for that frustration to be voiced. We knew starting on Soft tires would be risky, but it could have given us an advantage at the start. In the end, I accepted the advice, but we also miscalculated what others would do. But make no mistake, everything is fine with the team. Like in all successful partnerships, there are highs and lows, but we’re never afraid of tough conversations. That’s how we’ve managed to win so much together. We support each other until the end. It’s all love, see you in Austin.” – the future Ferrari driver explained ahead of the United States Grand Prix.
