Valtteri Bottas in Mercedes, part two—could this scenario happen? Yes, according to the Finnish driver. While Audi considers the best profile to pair with Nico Hulkenberg in 2025, Bottas, number 77, clearly wants to protect himself with a backup plan in case of any surprises.
Plan B-ottas
“First and foremost, the priority is to stay as a driver. That’s what I want, and that’s what I’m pushing for with Mattia,” the Finn said in a press conference ahead of the Mexican GP – “But, of course, since I haven’t signed anything yet—and it’s already October—I need to consider all alternatives, including a return to the Mercedes family. It’s definitely an option, and I would consider it. But there are also other options, aside from my priority to remain a driver.” – he pointed out.
When asked about the nature of his discussions with Mattia Binotto in recent weeks, Valtteri Bottas added, “We’ve agreed on all terms and conditions and the like. Now the ball is in their court, so I’ll keep waiting and doing my job.”
Despite the Finnish driver’s message, his continued presence on the grid in 2025 seems increasingly unlikely.
According to recent rumors, Audi’s choice for the second driver is likely to be between Gabriel Bortoleto, the current F2 leader and reigning F3 champion, and Franco Colapinto, who has quickly showcased important qualities at Williams. The final decision, as confirmed by former Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto himself, will not be made before November.
