In 2024, Red Bull went through its toughest period in recent years, and although Max Verstappen still managed to secure his fourth World Championship title, there were many rumors about a possible move to Mercedes. Despite the Dutch driver having a contract that binds him to his current team until 2028, the interest from Toto Wolff became so strong that it was nearly impossible to keep it under wraps.
The operation aimed at bringing Max to Stuttgart was so obvious that the driver didn’t even try to avoid the subject: “Even though I’m not thinking of changing, you never really know what could happen in a year or two. These are things you can’t control. I’m happy where I am. I feel good in the team, I can be myself, and everyone works hard to make sure I always have the best. I can’t complain,” he reportedly said on the ‘Simply Lovely’ show on ‘Viaplay.’
Max Verstappen: “We Need to Improve, but Red Bull is a Second Home”
The situation seemed idyllic for the Dutchman after securing his fourth consecutive title, but it’s clear that, having witnessed the decline in 2024, some doubts about the team’s performance level have begun to emerge: “We won another championship, but the car needs improvements. I think that’s very logical. The situation is quite clear. Around mid-season, we went through a difficult period when we could have given up. Instead, we reacted, and I personally worked hard to find solutions,” he said, as reported by ‘GPBlog.com.’
The four-time World Champion, not wanting to leave anything to chance, openly stated that he had a conversation with Toto Wolff about his future.
However, the talks didn’t progress because Max Verstappen still believes it makes much more sense to stay at Red Bull performance-wise than to move to Mercedes: “I won’t lie to you, we always talk to each other, and I’ve even sat down with him, but in the end, I really like where I am now. We’ve been very honest with each other. I’m very loyal to my team, I feel at home as if it were a second family, and right now, there’s not much to gain,” he concluded.
