F1 | US GP – Verstappen’s chase: “Where would I be in a McLaren? I don’t know…”
Max Verstappen is ready to renew his challenge against McLaren at the United States Grand Prix in Austin. During the drivers’ press conference, the Red Bull driver spoke about his chances in the championship and addressed questions about how he might perform if he were driving a McLaren. Max Verstappen also discussed the possibility of winning in Texas to keep the title fight with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri alive.
The Dutch driver finished the last Grand Prix in second place, behind Mercedes’ George Russell, clawing back some points on the McLarens of Piastri and Norris. Thanks to his victories in Monza and Baku, Verstappen is now just 63 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri.
During the press conference, Verstappen commented, “The last three weekends have been very good, some better than others. I still think we didn’t extract the full potential from the car in Singapore. We analyze every aspect and try to do better, and that’s what we’ll try to do again here.”
“This is a fantastic track to drive on. It will also be a Sprint weekend, so a bit hectic, but I’m curious to see what we can do,” he added. “This is a different car from the previous ones. There’s no guarantee it will work everywhere. I prefer to take it race by race.”
When asked about his chances of winning a fifth consecutive World Championship, after Norris had mentioned 10% and Russell 100% before the last Grand Prix, Verstappen replied pragmatically: “50%, you either win it or you lose it.” When asked where he would be in the standings if he were driving one of the two McLarens, Verstappen concluded: “I don’t know, and I don’t think it’s worth delving into.”
