However, the official Silver Arrows announcement did not specify the length of Russell’s deal, even though it is known to be a multi-year agreement. During the media day at the Circuit of the Americas, this topic dominated paddock discussions, with both drivers asked about their future. While there has “never been concern” in Antonelli’s garage, the omission of contract duration in George Russell’s case has raised some questions, not fully dispelled by the driver himself. An exit clause allows the team to potentially pursue another driver — Max Verstappen has often been linked to Brackley — and also gives the driver the option to join another team if Mercedes’ project falls short.
Russell, the contract renewal, and the exit clause
The long-awaited renewal has finally arrived: Toto Wolff has never doubted extending both of his drivers’ contracts, a fact he frequently confirmed to the media before the official announcement. The statement, released on the eve of the United States GP, confirmed the current lineup for 2026. “I’m really happy to continue,” Russell said during media day. “The truth is, if all seats were available next year and I could choose any team to race for, I believe Mercedes gives me the best chance to win the championship next year. For me, it’s more about winning than money, sponsorships, or anything else. I want to win, and that’s why I’m fighting.”
From 2026, the highly anticipated regulation changes will transform the sport, and Mercedes, benefiting from strong performance in previous technical cycles and a positive approach to the 2026 rule changes, positions itself as a favorite. “I think it all depends on performance. For any driver, or at least for me, knowing my performance is strong is what allows me to sleep well. That’s what keeps you on track as a driver.”

With the new regulations, the British driver sees a real chance to fight for the title — something he has not achieved in four years at Brackley — and if he performs in the first two-thirds of next season, his contract renewal will become “automatic.” When asked about his future beyond 2026, the 27-year-old avoided specifics: “Our intention, and my goal, is to continue with Mercedes, but without doubt, we are here to focus on winning in 2026.”
Antonelli: “Never worried, but reassuring to have confirmation”
The situation in Antonelli’s garage is calmer. The unspecified contract duration is standard for a rookie in the early F1 seasons. “The team has always been very clear about their plans and what they wanted to do. I’ve never been worried, but of course, it’s always nice to have confirmation, especially with all the ups and downs, particularly during difficult periods when doubts start to arise,” Antonelli explained. The young Italian also has an exit clause in his new contract, though the details are still evolving. What is certain is that the team’s confidence, especially from Toto Wolff, has never wavered during a season understandably full of challenges and achievements. “The team has always supported me and openly expressed the desire to continue working with me, especially next year. I’m really happy to have official confirmation. And I think, even though I already knew, it gives me a bit more peace of mind because now I know for sure I have that seat next year.”
For George Russell, the multi-year contract is secured despite the exit clause, while for Antonelli it is still in draft form. “I race year by year, and my goal is always to achieve the best possible results. As I said before about the team, it’s clear they want to work with me in the future, not just next year. I just have to give my best. Their plan is to continue with me, probably beyond 2026.” The next season will be a pivotal one for many in the paddock. “As a driver, I have to give my best and deliver results, especially next year because I’ll have a year of experience behind me. New rules will apply to everyone, and it will be a huge opportunity. Especially if we have a good car, it’s extremely important that I get the most out of it and deliver the best performance, particularly if I want to keep my seat for 2027 and beyond.”
