Toto Wolff, team principal of Mercedes, recently acknowledged that it’s time to end the discussions with three-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen. After the announcement of Lewis Hamilton’s departure, as the British driver will move to Scuderia Ferrari starting with the 2025 Formula 1 season, Toto Wolff had expressed interest in the Dutch driver, but now he says he has made a final decision.
Toto Wolff and the Mercedes team have already outlined their strategy for the 2025 season, focusing on George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the latter ready to debut in Formula 1 next season. This choice marks a significant shift in the team’s lineup, aiming at promising young talents.
In an interview with Autosport, the Austrian billionaire motorsport executive stated: “I’d say it’s time to stop. It’s true that I showed interest in Max, but when it comes to negotiations, there’s often something that doesn’t work internally. Now, we’ve already made our strategic decisions. We will continue to work discreetly and are confident in the choices we’ve made.” – the Mercedes team boss explained.
These words reflect Mercedes’ determination to solidify their position in the championship, relying on young and talented drivers like George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. Toto Wolff emphasized the importance of keeping a low profile and moving forward confidently with the decisions taken, ensuring stability and continuity for the team. The decision not to move forward with Verstappen opens new opportunities for Mercedes’ young drivers, who will have the chance to prove their worth in one of the most competitive teams in the world. George Russell, already an experienced driver, and newcomer Andrea Kimi Antonelli represent a balanced combination of experience and freshness, which Mercedes hopes will lead to positive results in the coming seasons.
