The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, held last Sunday at the Yas Marina Circuit, might have been Sergio Perez’s final race behind the wheel of a Red Bull. A decision from the Milton Keynes-based team regarding Checo’s future is expected shortly, although recent rumors suggest the Mexican driver may depart, with Liam Lawson from Racing Bulls set for a promotion.
Discussing what is still officially his teammate, Max Verstappen defended Sergio Perez, highlighting both his professional and personal qualities. The 2024 Formula 1 season was a challenging year for Perez, following the trajectory of his previous results.
Except for the very first races of the championship, the Mexican was unable to match Max Verstappen’s pace. Despite difficulties with the RB20, Verstappen managed to secure his fourth consecutive world championship. Sergio Perez, on the other hand, finished the 2024 season eighth in the standings, a staggering 285 points behind the Dutchman.
“Do I expect a new teammate? I don’t know, that depends on the team,” Max Verstappen said, as quoted by Motorsport.com.
Continuing his thoughts on Sergio Perez, the Dutchman added: “I’ve always worked very well with Checo; he’s a good guy, to be honest. It’s very rare to have a teammate like him, who has always been very good and also a great person.”
