Toto Wolff believes Andrea Kimi Antonelli possesses a rare quality that separates him from many Formula 1 champions of the past: he can be relentlessly fast on track while remaining kind, respectful and supportive away from it. After six victories from the opening 11 Grands Prix and a 50-point championship lead over Lewis Hamilton, the Mercedes youngster has been the outstanding performer of the first half of the 2026 season.
For Toto Wolff, however, Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s success is not the only remarkable part of his rise. The Mercedes team principal believes the Bologna-born driver can challenge the traditional idea that Formula 1 champions need to become ruthless, unpopular or opportunistic personalities in order to dominate.
Toto Wolff sees something different in Kimi Antonelli
Can a Formula 1 driver become successful, and even dominant, without alienating a large part of the public? Andrea Kimi Antonelli may soon provide an answer.
His extraordinary record of six wins from 11 Grands Prix has placed him firmly on top of the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship standings, 50 points clear of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton heading into the summer break.
According to Toto Wolff, who has worked closely with several world champions during his time in Formula 1, Andrea Kimi Antonelli possesses something that many of the sport’s great dominant figures have not always enjoyed: genuine popularity extending beyond traditional fan loyalties.
Speaking in an interview with RacingNews365, Toto Wolff explained why he believes the young Mercedes driver’s personality makes his performances even more valuable to the team.
“Everybody loves a fast driver,” Toto Wolff said. “But when that fast driver is also a kind person who supports the team and never says anything negative, then obviously you’ve hit the jackpot!
“In the past in Formula 1, people thought that to win you had to be an arsehole, ruthless and opportunistic. I don’t think Kimi is like that… He simply drives faster than the others but remains a kind person.”
Mercedes believes success will not change Andrea Kimi Antonelli
It is impossible to know exactly how Andrea Kimi Antonelli might change if he becomes an established Formula 1 champion over the coming years. Toto Wolff, however, does not expect success to fundamentally alter his character.
The Austrian has watched Andrea Kimi Antonelli develop since his karting years, with Mercedes bringing the Italian into its junior structure when he was only 12. That long relationship has allowed Toto Wolff to observe not only his development as a racing driver but also the influence of his family and education.
“We don’t know what will happen in three years, but I don’t think we will see any difference,” Toto Wolff continued. “He has had a solid upbringing.
“Which driver has earned a high-school diploma? Name me one who finished school. Nobody! His parents, on the other hand, would tell him, ‘Monday morning, after the kart race, you’re going to school.’
“Within our organisation, we are trying to guide Kimi as much as possible and make sure he doesn’t lose sight of what is important, even if his success continues to grow.”
Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s education was treated as a priority
Education has therefore been an important part of Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s development alongside motorsport. His parents ensured that racing commitments did not automatically take priority over school, even as his karting career became increasingly demanding.
Toto Wolff sees that upbringing as one of the reasons why the Mercedes driver has remained grounded despite the extraordinary speed of his rise. His progression through junior single-seaters was rapid, and he reached Formula 1 while still young enough to complete his secondary-school education during his racing career.
That background has become part of the wider phenomenon surrounding the Italian driver. Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s results have already helped generate renewed interest and growth across Italian motorsport, while his personality has made him an increasingly popular figure among fans.
Toto Wolff’s broader point about drivers failing to complete their education should not be taken literally. Several current and former Formula 1 drivers have completed secondary school, while some have pursued higher education. Marc Gené, for example, holds a university degree, while Nicholas Latifi also completed university studies after his Formula 1 career.
What makes Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s case unusual is primarily his age. Few modern Formula 1 drivers have still been completing their school education while already competing at the highest level. Max Verstappen, for example, left formal education before completing his diploma in order to focus entirely on racing after making his Formula 1 debut while still a minor.
Kimi Antonelli faces the next challenge of becoming an F1 champion
Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s results have already made him the clear benchmark of the first half of the 2026 championship, but converting that advantage into a world title will present another test altogether.
Mercedes must manage the growing expectations surrounding its young driver while ensuring that his development continues both inside and outside the car. Former Ferrari engineer Luigi Mazzola has already explained why Andrea Kimi Antonelli still has areas to develop despite his exceptional results.
For Toto Wolff, though, one of the most encouraging signs is that the success achieved so far has not changed the personality Mercedes first saw during Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s karting days. The speed was always the attraction; the challenge now is preserving the qualities around it as the possibility of becoming Formula 1 world champion grows increasingly real.
