Formula 1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali has praised Kimi Antonelli’s remarkable 2026 F1 title charge, calling the Mercedes driver “a breath of fresh air” and arguing that his championship advantage would be even greater without two technical retirements.
Antonelli has won six of the opening 11 Grands Prix and currently leads the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship. His combination of speed, strength and consistency has surprised even Domenicali, one of the most influential figures in the paddock.
Kimi Antonelli leads an Italian revival in Formula 1
Formula 1 fans are becoming accustomed to hearing the Italian national anthem at the end of Grands Prix in 2026. Until only a few weeks ago, such a scenario would have appeared almost unthinkable.
Historically, Ferrari has been almost solely responsible for bringing the anthem to Formula 1 podium ceremonies. However, over nearly the past two decades, victories for the Maranello team have been considerably less frequent than during the preceding era of sustained success with Michael Schumacher.
Now it is Andrea Kimi Antonelli who is celebrating. The Italian driver has put his country at the top of the Formula 1 podium in more than half of the races held so far, winning six of the opening 11 rounds.
His achievements are also a source of pride for Stefano Domenicali, the Italian who occupies the commercial summit of Formula 1 as president and chief executive officer of Formula One Group.

“I think having someone like Andrea Kimi Antonelli is truly fantastic for our sport,” Domenicali explained during a press conference attended by FormulaPassion.it.
“He is a breath of fresh air, he is still at the beginning of his career and he is very open to whatever comes his way. He has attracted many new fans through the way he interacts, which is very positive.
“From a sporting point of view, I also have to admit that he has shown himself to be very strong. Let’s not forget that, without the two retirements caused by technical problems with his car, his championship lead would have been even bigger.
“He is therefore proving to be very solid and one of the most interesting talents Formula 1 has welcomed.”
Domenicali’s assessment reflects the impact of the Mercedes driver’s stunning championship lead, achieved while competing in only the early stages of his Formula 1 career.
Monza will add another dimension to Antonelli’s breakthrough season
Attention will soon turn to how Antonelli is received when he arrives at his home race at Monza as the championship leader. His position creates an unusual dynamic: he is an Italian driver fighting for the world title, but he is doing so behind the wheel of a Mercedes, historically one of Ferrari’s greatest rivals.
The geographical connection also carries particular significance for Domenicali, who was born in Imola. Antonelli’s return to Italy will come after he revealed how his previous Monza experience affected him before his 2026 title campaign.
“For Italian fans, it is even more important because you know better than I do that the last Italian driver to achieve something significant was many, many, many years ago,” Domenicali continued.
“So it adds a completely new dimension as well. The relationship he has with the other drivers today is fantastic, although that could obviously change if he wins the World Championship. But that is in the nature of this sport.
“In any case, I can only be very happy with the way he is applying himself. I have known Kimi Antonelli for many, many years. And he is an incredible asset for the future of what we are doing together.”
