With the new regulations set to come into effect in 2026, Power Units will play a crucial role, and Mercedes doesn’t want to be caught unprepared. The engine component is what has given the German team its dominance during the hybrid turbo era. In the case of an extremely innovative effort, like in 2014, the Brackley team could return to fighting for the world championship, which has eluded them since 2021.
The Mercedes Team Principal, Toto Wolff, has spoken about the engine situation. In his statements, he did not hide his concerns about the team’s progress. The tricky part is operating in the dark regarding what the competitors are doing. It is difficult to gauge your own level without a reference point.
It’s worth noting that starting in 2026, the MGU-H will disappear from the Power Units, and the electric part will account for 50% of the power. Fuel production will also play a significant role, as it must be green and provide a fuel capable of optimizing performance and consumption.

Regarding the situation of Mercedes’ Power Units for 2026, Toto Wolff added: “We are meeting some expectations, which is good. In other cases, we are still pushing to reach our goals. The question remains: have we set the right expectations? The answer is that we don’t know where we stand.”
The concern of Mercedes’ Team Principal is that they might not be aiming too high. The doubts lie in whether the target the team has set is too low compared to their rivals. The answers will only come on the track, but we are sure that all Power Unit manufacturers working for 2026 share this perspective.
George Russell also addressed the issue, expressing confidence: “Normally, 2026 seems far away. In reality, in the world of Formula 1, it will be here tomorrow, and the team feels very confident for this new era. I think the team’s experience speaks for itself. The success since 2014, the time in Formula E, and the work done with the Hypercars.” – the British driver pointed out.
