Lance Stroll’s accident in the Brazilian GP
Images of Stroll’s awkward attempt to rejoin the track after spinning during the formation lap of the Brazilian GP quickly went viral. Lance Stroll didn’t just hit the wall shortly after losing control of his Aston Martin under braking; he made it worse by getting stuck in the gravel while trying to get back on track. Many considered this an avoidable error, unworthy of a Formula 1 driver, especially since there was a stretch of asphalt nearby that would have allowed him to avoid the gravel trap. Among the harshest critics of the young Canadian driver was former Haas team principal, Gunther Steiner.
Gunther Steiner’s Criticism
The South Tyrolean manager, as usual, didn’t hold back in sharing his opinion, criticizing Lance Stroll’s actions during an interview on the *Red Flag* podcast: “He knew he made a mistake during the formation lap, and then he just didn’t regain control of what he was doing. I think he panicked. These are situations where the world is watching, and you, in particular, are often under scrutiny. You make a silly mistake on the reconnaissance lap. So what do you do? Something even more stupid! It’s like he had a mental short-circuit.”
Beyond the specific error made at the Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo, Gunther Steiner also criticized Lance Stroll’s general attitude in the GP paddock: “He seems like he’s never happy, no matter what’s going on around him. I don’t know if he could become a world champion if he were just happy with what he does. I have no idea, because there are actually people who are very good at what they do even when they’re unhappy. We think Lance is unhappy, but maybe that’s just how he expresses himself. Many people criticize him, say he’s a poor driver, and that he’s only in F1 because his father owns the team. But let’s put it this way… If his dad didn’t own the team, I don’t think he would be an F1 driver, simply because he doesn’t want to be one.” – the former Haas team principal pointed out.
