How significant are the initial talks about Franco Colapinto?
The Las Vegas weekend could crown Max Verstappen as a four-time world champion with two weekends to spare; meanwhile, at Red Bull, Sergio Perez is playing his last cards in the hope of keeping his seat for 2025.
As reported by PlanetF1.com, Christian Horner met with James Vowles in Interlagos to discuss interest in Franco Colapinto. Helmut Marko had previously stated that Sergio Perez’s position would become clear at the end of the 2024 season.
If Red Bull decides to sign Franco Colapinto, it remains to be seen whether the young Argentine talent would become Verstappen’s teammate or race with the Racing Bulls team.
After long denying the rumors, Sergio Perez, on the eve of the Las Vegas weekend, had to admit that the American weekend could already be decisive for his position at Red Bull:
“It’s a track I like. I enjoy the experience of a street circuit, with tight walls, incomparable to the long straights. Although it’s a spectacular race for everyone participating and watching at home, it’s a race where I know I have to give my best and maximize my performance with this car. I’ve worked with the team and feel that São Paulo was much more competitive than we were able to show, so let’s get to work for the final three [races].”
Last year, Sergio Perez finished third in Las Vegas after losing second place to Charles Leclerc on the last corner of the final lap:
“We’re heading into a very important weekend in Las Vegas for the team. This race last season was new for everyone, with a fresh asphalt and temperatures we’re not used to racing in. In 2023, we barely had data, so this year we’re approaching this street circuit with much more information and knowledge.” – he concluded.
