Sergio Perez as a wrestler in Mexico
The driver from Guadalajara, who is coming off a terrible run in both performance and results, hopes to at least make a good impression in front of his fans, who, despite everything, have never stopped supporting him and showing great affection.
Checo’s hope is to return to fighting for a podium finish, though the results of recent races make that goal somewhat unrealistic.
In nine appearances at his home Grand Prix, the Red Bull driver has made it to the podium twice, in 2021 and 2022, but has also suffered two retirements, one of which occurred last year after contact with Charles Leclerc at the start in Turn 1.
“I tried to create something that people could identify with and say ‘this is Mexico,’ not just green, white, and red,” commented Sergio Perez ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix, which is set to take place at the 4.304-kilometre Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City on Sunday, October 27
The theme chosen for the helmet draws on the style of luchadores, the iconic wrestlers of lucha libre, a style of wrestling that originated in Mexico in the 1930s: “I remember Checo posted a photo in the arena (Arena Coliseo, Guadalajara) with a wrestling mask,” added Marco Aguirre, who designed the Mexican driver’s helmet – “I said to myself, ‘Checo likes fighting. A characteristic of Mexico is that whenever a mask appears anywhere in the world, it says Mexico on it.'” – he concluded.
