With only four races left in the 2025 Formula 1 season, Max Verstappen continues to fight for the championship title. Despite a difficult mid-season that seemed to have ended his chances, the Red Bull driver has dramatically turned things around since the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Earlier in the year, the title battle looked like a two-way fight between the McLaren drivers, but Max Verstappen has since joined the fray and remains in contention—though not without some challenges.
At the end of the Dutch Grand Prix, which marked the fifteenth round of the season, Max Verstappen was 105 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri. In the following races, the Red Bull driver mounted a strong comeback, closing the gap on both McLaren drivers. Meanwhile, Lando Norris took over the lead from Piastri. Now, with only four race weekends remaining, Verstappen sits just 36 points behind the Australian.
“We’ve had some good races where the gap has been reduced, but now, after four events, the difference is still quite big. I need to score a lot more points every single weekend, which isn’t easy,” Max Verstappen said. The upcoming Brazilian Grand Prix, featuring the sprint format, could offer him valuable opportunities to maximize his points haul.
“I mean, if you gave me the 2023 season, with how things went, and told me I was 36 points behind with four races left, I’d say, yeah, no problem, easy. But this season has been a bit different, so it’s all about optimizing everything and finishing the weekends strongly. We’ll probably need a bit of luck too.”
Unlike the two McLaren drivers, Max Verstappen feels he has a psychological advantage in this battle. “There’s not much to lose. I mean, in the worst-case scenario, we’ll finish third, and in the best case, we could win the championship. For me, there’s no pressure. Even if I don’t win, I know I’ve had a great season,” he explained. “I think the fact that we’re still talking about this fight is already quite remarkable. It’s definitely down to the team’s turnaround—they never gave up, and that’s one of our biggest strengths. I think it’s really impressive.”
