Max Verstappen’s future continues to be one of the most talked-about subjects in Formula 1, with growing speculation over whether the Dutchman could eventually leave Red Bull if the team fails to consistently provide him with a car capable of fighting for world championships in the current regulatory era.
Even though Red Bull has shown signs of improvement, uncertainty remains over whether the Milton Keynes squad can truly give Max Verstappen the machinery he needs to continue adding titles to his collection. And for a driver like the four-time world champion, that appears to be the only metric that really matters.
Could Max Verstappen leave Red Bull for Ferrari, Mercedes or McLaren?
If Max Verstappen were to walk away from the team with which he won all four of his Formula 1 world titles, the realistic destinations would appear limited. For a driver of his calibre, the logical options would likely be Mercedes, Ferrari, or McLaren.
According to former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher, Ferrari may seem like an obvious possibility, particularly amid speculation that Lewis Hamilton could choose to retire in the near future. However, the German believes Maranello may not actually be the right environment for Max Verstappen.
Ralf Schumacher doubts Ferrari would suit Max Verstappen
Speaking on the Backstage Boxengasse podcast, Ralf Schumacher explained his concerns about a potential Ferrari move:
“Many drivers dream of racing for Ferrari. It is a special brand in Formula 1, so anything is possible, but he would have to adapt himself to Ferrari’s structure at Maranello.
I struggle to imagine him there. Right now, things are not working particularly well at Ferrari, so he could find it difficult to manage that situation as a driver — especially if he arrived alone.”
While Schumacher did not clarify exactly what he meant by “alone,” the comment likely refers to the fact that Max Verstappen would be entering a completely unfamiliar environment, without the support network and trusted figures that have surrounded him throughout his Red Bull career. With several key members of his long-time inner circle either having already left or preparing to move on, a complete reset at Ferrari could represent a particularly difficult adjustment.
Mercedes seen as a more natural destination
For that reason, Ralf Schumacher believes Mercedes would make far more sense as a future home for Max Verstappen. The Dutch driver has already developed familiarity with the Mercedes environment through his GT3 racing activities, particularly via his Nürburgring endurance programme, and Ralf Schumacher believes that comfort could be an important factor.
“I think Max feels very comfortable with Mercedes, even in the GT3 setup. There’s a strong connection with the team he works with there.”
Schumacher also pointed to another crucial advantage Mercedes may hold: “They always have the best engines.”
Toto Wolff’s difficult decision
If Max Verstappen were to seriously consider Mercedes, team principal Toto Wolff would face one of the biggest driver dilemmas in Formula 1.
To make room for the Dutchman, Mercedes would likely need to choose between George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli — two drivers developed through the Mercedes junior system, both of whom have spent years dreaming of becoming world champion with the Silver Arrows.
That is what makes the entire Verstappen scenario so fascinating. Ferrari may carry the emotional appeal and prestige, but according to Ralf Schumacher, Mercedes may ultimately offer the more logical and competitive path for Formula 1’s most dominant current driver.
