F1 | The secret behind McLaren’s special livery for the Abu Dhabi GP
McLaren has unveiled a brand-new special livery that will be on track during the final Formula 1 weekend of the year in Abu Dhabi. The team will race with fresh colors on the MCL39 of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri for a Grand Prix that will not only decide the drivers’ title but will also represent a unique moment to celebrate the heritage of the Woking-based squad and the passion of its global fanbase. The alternative design will extend beyond the car itself, appearing on the drivers’ suits, garage elements, and even on the paddock screens.
McLaren heads to Yas Marina for what is arguably the most important event of the season. After an intense campaign spanning twenty-three races, the drivers’ standings are extremely close: Lando Norris remains in the lead, but by only twelve points over Max Verstappen. Oscar Piastri is still mathematically in the fight as well and could play a crucial role in the fate of the championship if he supports his teammate in the battle for the world title.
During the Abu Dhabi weekend, the Woking team will showcase a special livery that hides a small secret: it was created in collaboration with nine fans from across the globe. It is both a tribute to McLaren’s historic identity and a celebration of the passion of the supporters who back the team trackside and from afar.
New McLaren livery: the team’s official statement
Louise McEwen, Chief Marketing Officer of McLaren Racing, stated: “Our fans are at the heart of everything we do and this special livery is another way for us to show our appreciation. Through the ‘Live Your Fandom’ campaign with VELO, we’ve been able to celebrate their passion and creativity in a way that truly brings the Papaya family together.”
Luca Angiolillo, Global Head of Partnerships at BAT, added: “VELO believes in championing authentic self-expression, and what better way to do that than literally bringing the passion of the team’s fanbase onto the MCL39? This design is a powerful statement of just how deeply integrated fans are in the team’s journey.”
