F1 | Red Bull confident for 2026: “The new engine looks very promising”
Red Bull’s technical director, Pierre Waché, recently provided an update on the development of the car that the Milton Keynes team will field in the 2026 Formula 1 season.
The upcoming championship will introduce a major regulatory overhaul, featuring completely redesigned cars and new hybrid power units. For the first time in its history, Red Bull will produce its engine in-house through the Red Bull Powertrains division.
Waché provides an encouraging update
With just over three months until the first pre-season tests, Pierre Waché painted a positive picture of progress. He told RacingNews365, “It’s difficult to be certain about the engine, but it looks very, very promising.” He also emphasized that the biggest challenge will concern the chassis, which will be heavily influenced by the new aerodynamic rules. “Regarding the car, there are new regulations and it’s hard to predict what the other teams will do. Usually, you learn a lot after seeing what the others have done and trying to understand their ideas. I hope we find the right direction, but you can never be certain.”
Lessons from 2025
After four seasons of near-total dominance, 2025 proved to be a challenging transitional year for Red Bull, with inconsistent results and some setbacks in the Constructors’ Championship. However, thanks to recent victories from Max Verstappen, the team appears to have regained confidence and technical stability. Pierre Waché added, “What we are doing now is very important. Even though the regulations will change, everything we learn today about the car’s characteristics and what our drivers, including Yuki, need will be useful in the future. The solutions will change, but the underlying philosophy will remain.”
Looking ahead to a new era
All signs point to the 2026 revolution being a turning point for Red Bull, which, like Ferrari, will need to recover after a few difficult seasons. In the coming months, it will become clearer whether the decision to build the engine entirely in-house can translate into a new era of dominance for the team.
