F1 | Carlos Sainz also backs Mercedes for 2026: “That’s why I chose Williams”
Following Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz has also expressed confidence in Mercedes for the 2026 season and explained one of the reasons behind his decision to join Williams after leaving Ferrari.
Several insiders have already pointed out that the main challenge in 2026 will revolve around the engine, with Mercedes and Ferrari appearing as the top contenders. Rumors over the past months suggest that Toto Wolff’s team has been developing a top-tier power unit that could be decisive in outpacing the competition.
Sainz aligns with Verstappen’s outlook
Carlos Sainz confirmed that Mercedes’ upcoming engine was a key factor in his move to Williams. In an interview on El Partidazo de COPE, the Spanish driver explained: “I have a lot of confidence in Mercedes’ power unit for next year, and that was actually one of the main reasons I decided to join the Williams project. The information we have received so far is very positive, which gives me hope for the season ahead.”
He also acknowledged that chassis and overall car development will remain crucial. “At the same time, we must remember that Mercedes, McLaren, and Alpine will all use the same engine. So we will still need to work hard on the chassis and everything else. And we can’t forget Honda and Ferrari. The Red team will definitely be fighting at the front,” Carlos Sainz added.
His comments underline that while the Mercedes power unit offers a competitive advantage, Williams will need to optimize the car’s overall performance to challenge the frontrunners in 2026.
