The long-running Formula 1 driver market saga involving Max Verstappen, George Russell, and Andrea Kimi Antonelli is finally coming to an end. During the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix weekend at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit, the final pieces of the 2026 driver line-up puzzle appear to have fallen into place for two of the sport’s most prominent teams—Mercedes and Red Bull Racing. After months filled with speculation, rumors, denials, and supposed confirmations, everything now seems resolved thanks to a single, clear statement from Helmut Marko.
The experienced Red Bull advisor, speaking after the Belgian Grand Prix, brought an end to the so-called “Verstappen soap opera” that had dominated headlines in recent weeks.
At one point, it seemed likely that Max Verstappen could be heading to Aston Martin, enticed by a huge financial offer from Lawrence Stroll. Mercedes also emerged as a possible destination, with Team Principal Toto Wolff reportedly offering the reigning World Champion a leading role in a future title-winning project. Yet, in the end, and perhaps unsurprisingly, Max Verstappen has chosen to remain loyal to Red Bull Racing.
The Dutch three-time Formula 1 World Champion will continue racing for the Austrian outfit based in Milton Keynes, now led by recently promoted Team Principal Laurent Mekies. Verstappen’s decision ensures continuity for Red Bull Racing as the team prepares for the radical regulation changes scheduled for the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Helmut Marko confirmed this in an interview with the German outlet sport.de. His statement puts an end to all ongoing speculation. Verstappen’s choice not only strengthens Red Bull’s transition toward the new era but also plays a pivotal role in Ford’s upcoming Power Unit project. Moreover, it reflects the Dutch driver’s desire for personal freedom—an aspect often overlooked. Max Verstappen enjoys flexibility within Red Bull, whether that means racing in sim competitions the night before a Grand Prix or taking a high-speed lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a GT3 car. Very few teams besides Red Bull Racing would allow such liberties.
Mercedes stick with George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli for 2026
The biggest wildcard in the 2026 Formula 1 driver market was, or perhaps still is, the four-time World Champion Max Verstappen. His potential availability had the power to alter Mercedes’ long-term plans. However, in the absence of a Verstappen move, the Brackley-based team seems content to continue with their current driver pairing: George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
George Russell has always appeared to be the most logical choice for Mercedes. The British driver has become a reliable and consistent performer, with pace that matches the best drivers on the Formula 1 grid. His place within the team was never seriously in question.
As for Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the situation is more nuanced. The young Italian from Bologna has experienced a debut Formula 1 season filled with both highlights and difficulties. His maiden podium finish in the Canadian Grand Prix and an impressive pole position in Miami showcased his raw talent and potential. However, his overall consistency has at times fallen short, especially in comparison to his more experienced teammate George Russell.
Despite some underwhelming performances, Andrea Kimi Antonelli has little to worry about regarding his future. He is widely expected to remain with the Mercedes Formula 1 Team in 2026. Continuing with the Brackley outfit provides him with the ideal environment to further develop his skills without the intense pressure that comes with an immediate expectation to deliver race wins or a title challenge. For the Mercedes team, this driver pairing strikes the right balance between experience and youth, offering both immediate competitiveness and long-term growth.
