The ten-second penalty handed to Max Verstappen following his contact with George Russell during the Spanish Grand Prix was not the only sanction for the four-time world champion: for the move carried out on the Mercedes driver, the Dutchman also received three points on his FIA Super Licence, bringing his total to 11 due to previous infractions. Now, on the eve of the Canadian Grand Prix, there is a real risk facing Red Bull’s number 1.
Watch out for possible suspension
According to sporting regulations, if a driver accumulates 12 points within 12 months, they are automatically banned from the next race on the calendar. This means that if Max Verstappen commits another violation in Montreal, the reigning world champion will be unable to take part in the following race—the Austrian Grand Prix. A scenario the entire Red Bull camp is dreading, and not just because of Max Verstappen’s potential absence.
Austria, after all, is Red Bull’s home Grand Prix, and the team has already warned its driver not to do anything reckless in Canada to avoid a suspension for the Red Bull Ring. This was confirmed directly by Helmut Marko in an interview with speedweek.com: “Now he must not do anything wrong in the next two race weekends, and of course he’ll be told not to do anything rash. It would be a disaster if he couldn’t start in Austria, but we don’t expect that to happen, because it’s not like Max makes mistakes in every race. The first penalty points will be removed after Austria.” – the Red Bull advisor concluded ahead of the next round of the 2025 Formula 1 campaign, the Canadian Grand Prix, set to take place at the 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal.
