W16 struggles during European triple-header
Mercedes has struggled to maintain the strong form it showed at the start of the season during the last three races and has now lost its hold on second place in the Constructors’ standings. George Russell finished fourth in the Spanish GP, taking advantage of a late Safety Car triggered by the technical failure of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who, just like in Imola at his home GP, was unable to finish the race.
Now Formula 1 heads to Montreal, Canada, and Mercedes hopes to return to the level of performance it showed earlier in 2024. George Russell claimed pole position there and fought for the win for much of the race, which was eventually taken by Max Verstappen.
“We’re looking forward to getting back on track in Montreal after a demanding triple-header,” said Toto Wolff. “We know we need to be more consistent and continue making progress with the W16 if we want to regain the form we had at the beginning of the season. We were strong in 2024, and I hope we can replicate that level of performance.” For Andrea Kimi Antonelli, this will obviously be his debut on the unique circuit named after Gilles Villeneuve. The Bologna-born driver was impressive over a single lap in Miami—now it remains to be seen whether Kimi Antonelli can surprise again in Montreal after a few quieter weekends.
