A new chapter begins for Red Bull Racing as Laurent Mekies officially takes over the role of Team Principal and Chief Executive Officer following the departure of Christian Horner. The French engineer, known for his previous experience with Ferrari and Racing Bulls, steps into the leadership role at the Milton Keynes headquarters during a crucial mid-season phase of transition for the Anglo-Austrian team.
Christian Horner Out, Laurent Mekies In: A Leadership Shift at Red Bull
After years of dominance under Christian Horner, Red Bull is turning the page. Horner, who led the team from its inception and collected an extraordinary haul of 14 world championships—8 Drivers’ and 6 Constructors’ titles—has now officially left his position. In his place comes Laurent Mekies, a seasoned engineer from Tours, France, who brings with him a wealth of Formula 1 experience and a calm but determined leadership style.
Laurent Mekies’ appointment comes during a time of organizational reshuffling for Red Bull Racing. Having left Scuderia Ferrari in 2023, where he served in key engineering and sporting roles, Mekies moved to Faenza to take over the Racing Bulls project (formerly AlphaTauri). Now, with Horner gone, he has been promoted to the most senior role in the Red Bull Racing organization.
Laurent Mekies Begins His Red Bull Era with a Message of Unity and Energy
Speaking on his first day as Team Principal and CEO at Milton Keynes, Laurent Mekies expressed both gratitude and excitement as he addressed the team and the public. He wasted no time outlining his vision and primary goals, which focus on maximizing internal harmony and unleashing the full potential of the organization.
“I’ve always viewed this team from the outside as one of the most remarkable operations in all of Formula 1,” Laurent Mekies began. “There are some of the best individuals in the world working here. Even as a rival, you cannot help but admire what Red Bull has built—it’s a team that has successfully gathered top talent and brought out the best in them.”
Laurent Mekies emphasized that stepping into this role is a privilege and a responsibility he takes very seriously. “It’s an incredible honor to join this team. My goal is to create the right conditions so that every talented individual here can thrive. These people are already the best at what they do, and our job is to support them in delivering their maximum.”
Focus on Culture and Collaboration
Central to Mekies’ message was the idea of internal cohesion. The former Ferrari man made it clear that building a united, motivated team is key to navigating the post-Horner era.
“We will be fully focused on this—making sure that Red Bull’s unique energy flows through every part of the team,” Laurent Mekies explained. “We’re not underestimating the challenges that lie ahead. It will take the contribution of everyone, and we will face each situation as one unit. By doing so, I’m confident we can rise to the challenge.”
His words reflect a leadership philosophy that prioritizes collaboration and empowerment over command-and-control dynamics—a subtle but notable shift from the high-authority style often associated with Christian Horner.
A Season of Transition for Red Bull
Laurent Mekies now takes charge of a Red Bull team in the midst of one of its most delicate transitions in years. With the 2026 regulation changes approaching fast, and a paddock watching closely how the team adapts to its leadership change, the stakes could not be higher. Laurent Mekies’ first challenge will be to preserve Red Bull’s winning culture while steering it into a new era defined by innovation, teamwork, and resilience.
As Red Bull moves beyond the Horner era, all eyes will be on Laurent Mekies to see whether his more inclusive and internally focused approach can maintain the team’s status at the top of Formula 1.
