Laurent Mekies confident in Red Bull: “No weaknesses observed in the team”. Laurent Mekies defends Red Bull Racing.

After many years of dominating Formula 1 with multiple victories, interspersed with periods where the team still consistently demonstrated its competitiveness by fighting for wins and strong grid positions, Red Bull Racing has experienced some fluctuations in performance over the past two years following their breakout 2023 season.

The 2024 season initially appeared to mirror the successes of the previous year. However, a mid-season decline, combined with Sergio Perez’s struggles, meant that the only achievable target was Max Verstappen’s Drivers’ Championship. While the Dutch driver ultimately secured the title, it was not done without moments of tension and uncertainty. Moving into the 2025 season, McLaren emerged as a formidable competitor right from the opening rounds, immediately challenging Red Bull’s dominance.

Despite this, the Milton Keynes-based team continued to push Max Verstappen, who managed to claim victories in Japan and Imola, along with three excellent second-place finishes. However, once the European leg of the season began, Red Bull displayed a sudden performance drop. The combination of the second driver’s difficulties and, notably, Max Verstappen’s recent anonymous performances prompted the management to make a bold change, replacing Christian Horner with Laurent Mekies as team principal.

Mekies: “They are the best in the world; we must give them the tools to succeed”
The French manager, who has now been leading the team for over a month, emphasizes the strength, motivation, and determination of Red Bull Racing. According to Mekies, the team is eager to fight at the front and does not require major structural changes—just leadership that believes in its abilities. “There is incredible energy within the team. Every single member gives their maximum effort in every aspect of their work. My role is to ensure they have all the resources, support, and tools necessary to perform at their absolute best,” Mekies stated in an interview reported by F1technical.net.

He continued, “Year after year, Red Bull has proven to be the best in the world. On the rare occasions when they were not the absolute fastest, they were always very close. I observe the team carefully, and I do not see any real weaknesses. Our focus must remain on the races themselves, and that is what we will continue to work on together.”

Under Laurent Mekies’ leadership, Red Bull Racing aims to maintain its position at the very top of Formula 1, building on the incredible technical expertise of the engineers, the strategic acumen of the operations team, and the extraordinary talent of drivers like Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. With Mekies emphasizing continuity, trust, and resource provision, the team appears ready to navigate the challenges of the 2025 season and beyond while keeping its championship ambitions alive.
