The career of British engineer Alan Permane continues its steady climb through the ranks of Formula 1, as he has now officially been appointed as the new Team Principal of Racing Bulls, Red Bull Racing’s sister team. This promotion comes following the elevation of Laurent Mekies—formerly Team Principal at Racing Bulls—to the role of Chief Executive Officer at Red Bull Racing, in the wake of the sudden and highly publicized dismissal of Christian Horner.
Major Management Changes Across Red Bull and Racing Bulls
The sensational news of Christian Horner’s immediate termination from his position as Team Principal of Red Bull Racing has led to a sweeping reorganization not only within the main Milton Keynes-based team but also across its affiliated outfit, Racing Bulls, located in Faenza, Italy.
With Laurent Mekies now stepping up as the CEO of Red Bull Racing, his previous role as Team Principal of Racing Bulls became vacant. That position has now been entrusted to Alan Permane, who had already been serving as the Sporting Director of Racing Bulls since the start of the 2025 Formula 1 season.
Who Is Alan Permane?
Alan Permane is a seasoned and respected figure in the world of Formula 1, with a career spanning over three decades. Originally an electronics engineer by training, Permane began his F1 journey in 1989 with the Benetton Formula 1 Team, which at the time was jointly based in the United Kingdom and Italy.
By the following year, he had already transitioned into a trackside racing role within the Benetton team. He continued in this capacity until 1996, when he was promoted to the position of junior race engineer for Jean Alesi, a season that followed back-to-back World Championships for Benetton and Michael Schumacher. At that time, Schumacher had just departed for Scuderia Ferrari, replacing Jean Alesi himself.
During the 1990s, Alan Permane had the opportunity to work closely alongside legendary drivers such as Michael Schumacher and triple World Champion Nelson Piquet, gaining valuable technical and strategic experience in an era that defined modern Formula 1.
In 1997, Permane became Jean Alesi’s full race engineer and remained in that role across various driver pairings, including with Giancarlo Fisichella and Jarno Trulli during the Renault era—Renault having taken over Benetton in 2001. He held this role until 2006, a golden period during which the Renault F1 Team won consecutive Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships with Spanish driver Fernando Alonso in 2005 and 2006.
Climbing the Ranks: From Renault to Alpine
In 2007, Alan Permane was promoted to Chief Race Engineer at Renault, a role he maintained until the middle of the 2011 season. He then took on the position of Trackside Operations Director, overseeing on-track performance and coordination, a position he held until mid-2016.
His expertise and leadership were further recognized when he was appointed Sporting Director at the rebranded Alpine F1 Team. This chapter of his career, however, came to a close midway through the 2023 season when Permane, along with then Team Principal Otmar Szafnauer and Technical Director Pat Fry, left the French team amidst internal restructuring.
A New Chapter at Racing Bulls
Despite his brief hiatus from the F1 paddock, Alan Permane quickly returned to the sport. He rejoined the Formula 1 grid at the beginning of the 2025 season, taking on the role of Sporting Director for Racing Bulls, the team formerly known as AlphaTauri.
With Laurent Mekies now promoted to a top-level executive position within the Red Bull family, the Faenza-based squad has decided to hand over the reins of team leadership to Alan Permane. The upcoming Belgian Grand Prix will mark Permane’s debut as a full-fledged Team Principal in the Formula 1 World Championship.
This appointment places Permane at the forefront of one of Formula 1’s most promising development projects, as Racing Bulls continues its mission to groom drivers, test innovations, and contribute strategically to Red Bull Racing’s broader objectives.
With a depth of technical knowledge, extensive hands-on experience, and a track record of working with multiple world champions, Alan Permane’s leadership could be a turning point for Racing Bulls, especially as the sport prepares for a significant regulatory overhaul in 2026.
