Sergio Perez’s future at Red Bull Racing is a topic of debate, with some suggesting he is guaranteed his seat until next season, while others believe he might be on the verge of losing it.
Officially, Perez has already secured a contract that will see him race for Red Bull until the end of the 2025 season, with the possibility of an additional year.
However, the fact that the only remaining seat for next season is with the sister team, RB, raises some concerns.
Yuki Tsunoda has a deal in place for 2025, but Liam Lawson’s future is uncertain.
The young New Zealander replaced Daniel Ricciardo after the Singapore Grand Prix and was given six races by the team to prove his worth for a full-time Formula 1 seat.
With two 9th-place finishes in three races, Lawson is nearly assured of a place on the grid, though which seat he will occupy remains unclear. Liam Lawson has been linked to Perez’s spot at Red Bull, but no final decisions are expected until the conclusion of the season.
Journalist Alex Kalinauckas discussed Sergio Perez’s situation on the *Flat Chat with Codders Podcast*. Red Bull has reportedly been “pretty furious” with Perez’s crash record this season. Alex Kalinauckas shared his thoughts on the Mexican driver’s position: When it comes to Perez, there was a lot of speculation around the Brazilian Grand Prix just gone that Franco Colapinto could potentially be an option for Red Bull, whether that was joining the RB team, as was first supposed, and then the sort of more suggestive, more fiery rumours pointing that Christian Horner could even be considered putting him straight in at Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen. He had a terrible crash there, and that will have had to be taken into account because I’m told at Red Bull, they’re pretty furious that Sergio Perez is unofficially leading the Crash Damage World Championship, although probably the Williams drivers are getting close to him.” – he pointed out.
“Maybe the Red Bull parts are worth a little bit more, I don’t know. With the Brazilian weekend, the sort of thinking there was, wow, Perez really is in trouble. Even Christian Horner, who’s got this fierce, personal loyalty to him, is really getting sick of the fact that he can’t get close to Max Verstappen enough to make certain of a Constructors’ Championship, which doesn’t look like Red Bull are going to win. If they can’t win it this year, there’s no way they’re going to win it next year with the same lineup if the front of the grid is close again.” – Alex Kalinauckas added.
The financial aspect appears to be a key factor in determining Sergio Perez’s future with Red Bull.
With only three races left, Perez is likely to remain at the top of the crash damage standings unless either of the Williams drivers makes a mistake at the challenging Las Vegas street circuit.
Sergio Perez was leading the damage chart back in June, indicating that his performance in avoiding accidents hasn’t improved in recent months.
In sharp contrast, Pierre Gasly has yet to cause any crash damage, making him the only driver on the grid to achieve this.
Team bonuses are tied to the final position in the Constructors’ Championship, and Red Bull may miss out on the title due to Perez’s difficulties. While Perez brings significant sponsorship revenue to Red Bull, which covers the costs of any damage he incurs, it won’t come close to compensating for the missed prize money the team faces from falling short in the standings.
Red Bull finds itself in a difficult position. While it currently seems likely that they will stick with Perez, the situation remains uncertain. Until Lawson finalizes his deal with RB and the future of Franco Colapinto is clarified, nothing is guaranteed for Sergio Perez.
