Audi confirms Jonathan Wheatley’s departure
On the afternoon of Friday, March 20, Audi officially announced that Jonathan Wheatley had left his role as team principal – which he had assumed in April 2025 – with immediate effect for “personal reasons.”
He has been replaced by Mattia Binotto, who was already part of the organization as head of Audi’s F1 project.
This departure didn’t come as a complete surprise, as rumors had been circulating the day before suggesting Jonathan Wheatley was close to accepting an offer from Aston Martin.
Binotto and Wheatley: friction behind the scenes?
The Telegraph reported on what had been whispered around the paddock for some time: “We have heard rumors of tensions between Wheatley and Mattia Binotto.”
Other media outlets also reported the same story while covering Wheatley’s exit from Audi.
Swiss newspaper Blick explained: “Within the company, it was well known that Binotto and Wheatley clashed behind the scenes over the definition of their respective responsibilities. However, Audi always publicly downplayed this internal power struggle.”
German outlet Bild added: “Not only was his wife Emma struggling to settle in Switzerland, but Wheatley also faced difficulties, especially with project head Mattia Binotto. The Italian’s role was to transform the team into a top contender, leading chassis and engine development. Wheatley was responsible during the Grand Prix weekends. This led to clashes and disagreements. These tensions were noticed not only by employees but also by Gernot Dollner, who realized by the second half of 2025 that a dual leadership setup would not be sustainable long-term…”
As a result, Audi held an emergency meeting on Friday, which led to Jonathan Wheatley’s immediate departure.
The incompatibility between Mattia Binotto’s technical oversight and Wheatley’s operational command proved too volatile for the stability of the new project. By consolidating power under Mattia Binotto, Audi is signaling a desire for a singular, unified vision as they navigate the complex 2026 technical regulations. Based on the content of these recent reports, the upcoming weeks will likely reveal whether Wheatley’s move to Aston Martin becomes official, potentially shifting the balance of power in the midfield.
