The 2026 F1 season has only just started, with just two races completed, but the hierarchy on track is already becoming clear. Mercedes looks like the fastest team among the top contenders, while Ferrari and McLaren are still playing catch-up. Red Bull, despite a strong showing in Australia, struggled significantly in China both in qualifying and during the race.
This early stage of the season brings back old rumors that Max Verstappen could replace George Russell at Mercedes for the 2026 F1 World Championship. Of course, this did not happen: Max Verstappen chose to stay loyal to Red Bull, although the team’s recent struggles seem to have caused some dissatisfaction for the Dutch champion.
Is Russell ready to leave?
Damon Hill and Johnny Herbert discussed the situation on their podcast Stay on Track, focusing especially on George Russell’s role at Mercedes. Both former drivers highlighted how Toto Wolff appears to be putting his focus on Kimi Antonelli, leaving Russell in a delicate position within the team.
“I’ve heard rumors again that, since Max isn’t completely happy at Red Bull, Mercedes could take him? In that case, George would almost become a temporary driver. It’s really complicated,” Hill explained.
Johnny Herbert added: “George is a bit left to his own devices. Sure, he has a chance to win the championship this year, but that doesn’t guarantee him a future at Mercedes. All he can do as a driver is give his best and hope to take the title. And if he doesn’t stay with the team afterwards, he should be proud of what he achieved: the goal was always to win the championship from the start.”
The high-stakes musical chairs of the F1 driver market therefore show no signs of slowing down, even with a clear favorite for the 2026 crown. While George Russell is currently the man to beat on track, the shadow of Max Verstappen continues to loom large over the Silver Arrows’ long-term plans. Based on the content of these paddock whispers, the 2027 Silly Season might start even earlier than expected, regardless of who takes home the trophy in Abu Dhabi.
