Belgian Grand Prix: Oscar Piastri reaffirms his place at the heart of McLaren’s future
Oscar Piastri has made it clear that he expects to remain a McLaren driver in 2027, putting an end to speculation that his seat could be at risk if Max Verstappen were to leave Red Bull. The Australian addressed the growing rumours surrounding the Formula 1 driver market, insisting he has complete confidence in both his future and the support he continues to receive from the McLaren team.
With Max Verstappen once again at the centre of transfer speculation, suggestions had emerged that the four-time world champion could eventually move to Woking. However, Oscar Piastri has left no room for doubt about where he sees his own future.
Piastri dismisses the rumours
Speaking to the media ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, Oscar Piastri was asked directly whether he expected to be driving for McLaren in 2027: “Yes. I didn’t think that was even a topic of discussion, but yes,” the Australian replied, making his position perfectly clear.
Although he acknowledged that he had seen and heard the rumours linking Max Verstappen with his seat, Oscar Piastri explained that they had done little to affect his confidence.
McLaren’s support has never been in doubt
Oscar Piastri revealed that McLaren’s leadership has been fully supportive throughout the speculation. He highlighted the reassurance he has received from CEO Zak Brown, team principal Andrea Stella and the rest of the organisation.
“I’ve obviously seen some of the reports and heard people talking about them,” he said. “But I’m very comfortable with where I am and with my position inside the team. Zak Brown, Andrea Stella and everyone at McLaren have been fantastic throughout all of this. They’ve been very reassuring.”
The Australian also reflected on Max Verstappen’s situation, suggesting that the Red Bull driver may simply be evaluating the options available to him as his future continues to generate headlines: “Clearly, Max Verstappen is hearing things… I don’t know, maybe he’s not in the ideal position right now, or perhaps he’s exploring different options. It was the same story last year with Mercedes. There’s nothing new about that. As for me, I’m very happy with where I am, with how things are going and with the direction we’re taking.”
Trust comes before rumours
When asked whether McLaren’s management had spoken to Max Verstappen about a possible future move, Oscar Piastri admitted that he did not know the answer—but also made it clear that it was not something that concerned him.
“I don’t know,” he replied. “Honestly, I don’t really care. It’s important for people to understand how Formula 1 works and how the driver market operates. Any information people can find becomes a talking point. I trust this team, I trust what they’ve told me, and I trust the confidence they have in me. That’s really all that matters.”
With McLaren continuing to fight at the front of the Formula 1 grid, Oscar Piastri’s comments send a strong message that he sees his long-term future firmly tied to the Woking-based team, regardless of the speculation surrounding Max Verstappen’s next career move.
