Lando Norris will serve a 10-place grid penalty at the 2026 Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix after McLaren fitted a new power electronics unit to his car. The component change was necessary following the reliability problems that have affected both McLaren and its Mercedes power unit supply during the opening part of the season.
McLaren has exceeded the permitted allocation of this particular component following failures at previous races, including the Chinese and Japanese Grands Prix. Although the change is intended to address the problems experienced earlier in the campaign, it means the reigning world champion will begin the Belgian Grand Prix from 10 positions lower than his qualifying result.
Lando Norris accepts Belgian GP grid penalty
Lando Norris has had to accept the setback as the consequence of several unfortunate failures involving different elements of the Mercedes power unit. Speaking during media day at Spa-Francorchamps, Lando Norris acknowledged that the penalty would make an already challenging weekend even more complicated.
“This weekend certainly isn’t going to be made any easier by the grid penalty,” Lando Norris said. “It’s only because I was unlucky in the first part of the season and lost many different components, whether it was the engine, the control electronics or whatever it might have been.”
“I’m at a disadvantage in terms of the spare components I have available, but that is outside my control and, in some ways, outside the team’s control as well. That’s life.”
Despite the disappointment, Lando Norris believes Spa-Francorchamps offers better opportunities to recover from a grid penalty than some of the circuits coming later in the Formula 1 calendar. Its long lap, extended full-throttle sections and overtaking possibilities should give McLaren more options to fight back through the field.
“I just have to take it in my stride and deal with some of the penalties that will come, but this is certainly a better circuit at which to serve them than the next two,” Lando Norris added. “It’s part of the game, but we can still look ahead and try to have a good weekend.”
McLaren struggles to match Mercedes and Ferrari
McLaren has found it difficult to match the performance of Mercedes and Ferrari during the 2026 Formula 1 season. Red Bull has also made progress, leaving the reigning champions operating as the fourth-fastest team on the grid.
Reliability problems have been particularly costly for Lando Norris, who must now recover both positions and lost momentum. The Belgian GP grid penalty further complicates that task at a point when McLaren is attempting to reduce its performance deficit to the leading teams.
The challenge could become less predictable if Spa’s notoriously changeable conditions intervene. The latest Belgian Grand Prix weather forecast points towards cooler temperatures and a threat of rain, potentially creating additional opportunities for Lando Norris to recover positions.
New McLaren rear wing brings only a marginal gain
Lando Norris also highlighted the importance of McLaren’s upcoming technical developments. The team has introduced a new rear wing at the Belgian Grand Prix, with further upgrade packages scheduled to arrive in Budapest and Zandvoort.
The rear wing forms part of the wider collection of Formula 1 upgrades introduced at Spa, but Lando Norris warned that its immediate performance benefit will be extremely limited.
“Every little thing helps,” Lando Norris said. “When you see an upgrade listed in the notes, you think it is going to change everything.”
However, Lando Norris explained that the new component is unlikely to transform McLaren’s competitive position. Its estimated contribution may be less than one tenth of a second and possibly below half a tenth.
“The rear wing we have this weekend is a very, very small step, probably not even one tenth of a second,” Lando Norris clarified. “Maybe not even half a tenth.”
McLaren looks towards Budapest and Zandvoort upgrades
McLaren hopes the packages planned for the Hungarian and Dutch Grands Prix will help accelerate its development rate. However, Lando Norris stressed that the team cannot rush the process or expect performance improvements to appear instantly.
“We are talking about small numbers, and hopefully the upgrades we will have in Budapest and Zandvoort can help us accelerate that progress,” Lando Norris explained. “But we are doing what we can. You cannot rush these things and you cannot make them appear magically.”
“We are paying the price, we are working hard, the team is working hard, and we are keeping our heads down to maximise what we have now.”
The 2026 Belgian Grand Prix will therefore become a test of both McLaren’s reliability and its ability to recover under difficult circumstances. Lando Norris faces a significant challenge from his grid penalty, while the modest rear-wing improvement means the reigning world champion will need to maximise every available opportunity at Spa-Francorchamps.
