Nico Rosberg defends Kimi Antonelli: “A once-in-a-generation talent Like Verstappen and Hamilton”. Nico Rosberg defends Andrea Kimi Antonelli amid poor results.

Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes 2025 F1

Former Formula 1 World Champion Nico Rosberg has come out in strong defense of young Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli, emphasizing that his current difficulties are primarily mental. According to Rosberg, only positive results on track can help the 18-year-old Italian regain confidence and return to his true form.

Antonelli’s Struggles in Formula 1
Andrea Kimi Antonelli is currently enduring the most challenging period of his still-young Formula 1 career. After showing immense promise, the Italian driver from Bologna has found himself in a serious slump, with his emotional breakdown at Spa-Francorchamps becoming one of the most talked-about moments of the recent race weekend. His tears, following yet another disappointing performance, quickly spread across the paddock and resonated with fans and insiders alike, highlighting the emotional toll this difficult stretch has taken.

Despite the tough results, Antonelli continues to receive full support from both his colleagues and his team. While some observers have questioned how Mercedes has handled the situation publicly, there has never been any doubt about Team Principal Toto Wolff’s managerial abilities or his unwavering belief in Antonelli’s long-term potential. The Austrian team boss is fully convinced of the young driver’s talent and is working hard to help him overcome this mental roadblock.

Toto Wolff is well aware that the core of the issue is psychological. Antonelli seems to be holding back, as if racing with the handbrake on. Some speculate that ongoing media rumors—particularly those suggesting that reigning World Champion Max Verstappen might be considering a move to Mercedes—may have unsettled the young driver. In reality, such a move seems increasingly unlikely, but the rumors have nevertheless added pressure.

This mental block has translated into a worrying string of poor performances. Antonelli has failed to score points in six of the last seven race weekends, a result not solely due to his own mistakes, but also affected by bad luck and questionable strategy calls from the pit wall. Regardless of the causes, the results on paper have painted a bleak picture, leading to growing scrutiny.

Nico Rosberg’s Support for Antonelli
Despite these challenges, Andrea Kimi Antonelli continues to enjoy respect throughout the Formula 1 paddock. Nico Rosberg, who won the 2016 World Championship with Mercedes and has known Antonelli personally from his days in karting—where Antonelli was part of the Rosberg Racing Academy—has publicly backed the young driver.

“Kimi is undoubtedly a generational talent, on the same level as Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton,” Rosberg told Sky UK. “He’s proven himself at every stage, from karting all the way up to single-seaters. But in Formula 1, mental form is just as important as raw speed. When you make too many mistakes and lack rhythm, it’s easy to fall into a negative spiral, and that’s exactly where he is right now. It’s a situation that’s difficult to watch.”

Nico Rosberg also highlighted how Mercedes’ current technical struggles are compounding Antonelli’s problems. “Mercedes is in a tough spot as well—they recently had to hold an emergency meeting to regroup,” Nico Rosberg added. “At Spa, Kimi was just three and a half tenths behind George Russell in qualifying, and that was on one of the longest laps of the season. But that small gap meant George started on the third row, while Kimi found himself near the back of the grid. It’s an incredibly difficult situation.”

Rosberg pointed out that the car’s lack of competitiveness makes it harder for a young driver like Antonelli to build self-confidence. “If they were both driving for McLaren right now, they’d be starting first and second on the grid. That would do wonders for Kimi’s confidence,” he said. “Finishing second or third in a race like the Canadian Grand Prix can be a huge boost for a young driver, even if their teammate ends up winning. Those kinds of results are essential for morale.”

Antonelli’s supporters hope that once Mercedes returns to a more competitive position, the talented Italian will rediscover the form that made him one of the most hyped prospects in recent memory.
