The most talked-about episode following the 2025 British Grand Prix at Silverstone remains the controversial penalty handed to Australian driver Oscar Piastri. The incident, which unfolded during a Safety Car period shortly before the race resumed, saw Piastri brake abruptly, a move that the race stewards considered dangerous and unjustified. The decision to issue a 10-second time penalty proved pivotal, effectively stripping the McLaren driver of a potential victory and handing the win to his teammate Lando Norris.
A key episode that changed the outcome
The moment in question occurred during the final Safety Car phase. As the field prepared for the restart, Oscar Piastri slowed sharply just after the Safety Car lights were turned off. This unexpected deceleration created confusion behind, with Max Verstappen taking advantage to overtake. The race stewards reviewed the maneuver and found it to be a breach of the regulations, imposing a 10-second penalty that Piastri served during his final pit stop. As a result, the Australian dropped behind Lando Norris in the final classification, losing what could have been a second career win in Formula 1.
Oscar Piastri’s perspective
Speaking to the official Formula 1 media after the race, Oscar Piastri offered a calm yet clearly disappointed reaction. While the Australian driver had initially refrained from making comments over team radio—joking he didn’t want to “risk being banned for a year”—he later elaborated on what he felt was an overly harsh punishment. “Yes, I thought the penalty was quite harsh. But regardless, we had a very fast car today, and I think we demonstrated everything we needed to,” said Piastri, who currently leads the championship standings. “It’s disappointing when the result you’ve earned is taken away from you, but that’s how things go sometimes.”
Describing the incident, the McLaren driver recounted the moment with a hint of irony: “What happened? I braked, saw the Safety Car lights go out, so I didn’t accelerate again, and Max Verstappen passed me. It was a bit strange. Then I got a penalty for it. All very straightforward,” he said with noticeable sarcasm, highlighting his frustration with how the situation was handled.
Max Verstappen distances himself from the penalty
As for Max Verstappen, the Red Bull Racing driver seemed uninterested in stoking further controversy. While not directly criticizing the penalty, the four-time World Champion subtly hinted that he considered the 10-second sanction to be excessive. The Dutch driver compared it to a similar incident he experienced with George Russell just a few weeks earlier at the Canadian Grand Prix.
“It’s happened to me a couple of times now—people doing that in front of me,” Verstappen said, referencing the scenario where drivers in front slowed unexpectedly. “And I saw that after the race a 10-second penalty was handed out. That’s quite extreme. Giving 10 seconds for something like that… but I don’t make the rules,” Verstappen added, implying that while he may not fully agree with the decision, it is not up to him to decide what is and isn’t fair.
The incident has reignited discussions within the Formula 1 paddock about the consistency and severity of penalties, especially during Safety Car restarts. As the championship fight intensifies, such moments will undoubtedly continue to shape the dynamics between drivers and teams on and off the track.
