Lance Stroll secured a solid seventh-place finish at the 2025 British Grand Prix, marking his best result of the season and, for the first time this year, finishing ahead of his Aston Martin team-mate Fernando Alonso. The Canadian driver delivered a consistent and determined performance at Silverstone, helping Aston Martin score a double top-10 finish at their home Grand Prix.
Double top-10 finish for Aston Martin at home
It was a more than positive result for the Silverstone-based team, Aston Martin, at their home race. For the first time in the 2025 Formula 1 season, both drivers brought home points, with Lance Stroll finishing seventh and two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso crossing the line in ninth. While Alonso has typically led the team this year, this race marked the first time Stroll finished ahead—excluding races in which Alonso retired.
Strategy not fully optimal
Despite the overall success, Fernando Alonso expressed some disappointment regarding the race strategy implemented by the team. At the end of the Grand Prix, the Spanish driver pointed out missed opportunities due to weather-related misjudgments. “I feel like it was a missed chance despite scoring some points,” Fernando Alonso admitted. “It was very difficult to read the conditions with the rain coming back, and we lost a few positions during the first pit stop. For the second stop, we rejoined too early and I lost a lot of time driving on a still-damp track with slick tyres. We had decent pace, but in the end, we couldn’t fully capitalise on a chaotic race. I’m very happy for Nico Hülkenberg, who scored his first podium. I hope he enjoys the celebrations.”
Strong comeback for Stroll
Lance Stroll had a notably positive race, especially considering he started from 17th position on the grid. Thanks to a well-executed strategy—starting on intermediate tyres and switching to slicks just before the heavy rain returned—Stroll found himself running in third place during the mid-phase of the Grand Prix. However, as the race unfolded, the Canadian had to deal with increasing tyre degradation, which limited his ability to fight for higher positions.
“The Silverstone weekend was full of contrasts,” said Lance Stroll after the race. “We showed decent pace in Friday’s practice sessions, but unfortunately we couldn’t convert that into a good qualifying result and had to start from the back. During the race, the team made some good strategy calls, and overall we achieved a strong result. I struggled a lot with tyre degradation in the final stages, and unfortunately we weren’t in a position to challenge for more. Nico Hülkenberg had much better grip during the last stint, and considering the level of tyre wear, we achieved the best result possible.”
Aston Martin’s performance at Silverstone was a promising step forward after a string of difficult races, with Lance Stroll’s racecraft and strategic decisions showing the team’s resilience. Despite the challenges, a double-points finish on home soil offers valuable momentum heading into the next round of the championship.
