Ocon faces new challenges as Bearman rises
Despite finishing in the points at the penultimate Grand Prix, it’s clear that this is not the strongest phase of Esteban Ocon’s career when compared to his teammate’s performance.
A difficult trend continues
The challenging weekend in São Paulo confirms a trend that has been evident since the post-summer break. Since returning from the holidays, Esteban Ocon has struggled to finish a race ahead of the less experienced Oliver Bearman. Meanwhile, Ollie Bearman is starting to find consistency, amassing 32 points compared to just three for the French driver from Zandvoort to now. The 20-year-old Ferrari Driver Academy member’s fourth place in Mexico two weeks ago allowed him to surpass Esteban Ocon in the Drivers’ Championship, while his sixth place in Interlagos extended that lead to +10 points.
Time attack confirms Bearman’s rise
When it comes to qualifying, the story hasn’t changed much. From Monza onwards, Ollie Bearman has consistently outqualified Esteban Ocon, reaching Q3 in four consecutive events: Singapore, Austin, Mexico, and Brazil. Much of this success is down to the British driver, who is finally showing his talent and value consistently, even while sharing a garage with a tough teammate—one whose experience and skill have previously earned respect from drivers like Sergio Perez, Fernando Alonso, and Pierre Gasly. However, experience alone no longer seems sufficient to secure the upper hand.
Car updates favor Ollie Bearman
It’s also worth noting the improvements introduced to the VF-25. The updates brought in Austin appear to better suit Ollie Bearman’s driving style while moving away from Esteban Ocon’s preferences. This combination of a rising teammate and car updates has created a challenging environment for Esteban Ocon as he seeks to reassert his position within the team.
