Mika Hakkinen in Monaco: “McLaren very strong at the moment, Max is missing something…”. Mika Hakkinen praises McLaren's strength in 2025.

Mika Hakkinen, 2024

Red Bull is currently the only team that has managed to challenge McLaren in the 2025 championship. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say Max Verstappen, but in Imola it seemed that even the RB20 played a role. Mika Hakkinen, interviewed by Mara Sangiorgio of Sky Sport Italia, spoke about this battle.

“I see that McLaren are very strong at the moment, there are incredible people working in the team and the drivers push each other to the limit. Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris are amazing; they manage to improve the car. Verstappen has to deal with them. He can’t challenge them alone—long-term, he’ll need a high-level teammate who forces him to push his limits. There’s always a weak spot somewhere, but you need someone to learn from. Max doesn’t have that. In my era? He would’ve been among the best.”
