Nico Hülkenberg and the Sauber challenge
After three years out of the sport, Nico Hülkenberg returned to F1 as a key player, becoming one of the main contributors to Haas‘s growth. His strong two-year stint with the American team earned him the attention of several teams, despite his age—he will turn 38 in August—and ultimately led to a call from Sauber, which aims to make him their anchor driver during the transition to Audi.
For Nico Hülkenberg, 2025 might represent a step back in competitiveness, with the promise of aiming for more ambitious goals alongside the next generation of cars. However, it will still be a crucial season for the #27, who refuses to passively accept the scenario of finishing last in the Constructors’ standings and instead intends to immediately contribute to the success of Kick Sauber.
Nico Hülkenberg’s comments
“I want to make fewer mistakes in 2025. But the midfield pack is very competitive: everyone is very close in terms of performance, so the margins are tight,” he told *Speedweek*. “Sometimes you have to take risks, and mistakes can happen. And with these cars, mistakes often lead to major incidents.” – the former Haas driver pointed out.
Mattia Binotto, head of Audi’s F1 project, recently stated that he has found a team already focused on 2026. However, the Italian engineer has tried to shift this mindset, pushing for improved results as early as 2025.
