Max Verstappen was unable to secure pole position in Mexico. The four-time world champion could only manage fifth on the grid, struggling with low grip and pace compared to Lando Norris and the Ferrari duo, who claimed the top three positions. After qualifying, Max Verstappen shared his thoughts on the session.
Qualifying struggles
“We tried many different things on the car, but unfortunately qualifying didn’t go well at all. It wasn’t for lack of effort: in some areas we improved, while in others it got worse, which overall made the car very difficult to drive. Unfortunately, the balance was unpredictable, we couldn’t push, and the car was sliding much more, which on a track like this is not ideal. Simply put, we didn’t have grip and we didn’t have enough pace, and the weekend hasn’t been particularly positive for us.” – the four-time Formula 1 world champion pointed out at the end of the qualifying session for the 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
Looking ahead to the race
Regarding Sunday’s race, Max Verstappen’s main focus is avoiding trouble: “For the long runs tomorrow, it’s hard to predict, but I don’t expect the pace to be much better than in qualifying, and overtaking will be difficult. I’ll try to do my best. I think it will be a tough race with the cars ahead, and it will be hot and demanding for the tires. The most important thing is to stay out of trouble, as it’s a very long race. We will try to give our best and maximize what’s possible,” he concluded. Now, all that’s left is to wait and see what the #1 driver can achieve.
